I am happy to be able to inform you the wonder of Shimanami Kaido!
It is the beginning of Shimanami Kaido cycling!
Introduction of cycling course
The entrance of Shimanami Kaido is located in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture.
Onomichi is the gateway to Shimanami Kaido.
Many cyclists always gather here.
Start from the gateway of Shimanami Kaido, Onomichi, and head 70 km towards Imabari.
As soon as you leave Onomichi Station, the ocean comes into view, and the excitement begins!
The first island on the Shimanami Kaido is Mukaishima.
To get there from Onomichi, pedestrians and cyclists take a ferry.
Mukaishima
In just a few minutes, you’ll arrive at the Mukaishima ferry landing.
From here, the real Shimanami Kaido cycling adventure begins.
Ride along while enjoying the tranquil sea and feeling the breeze.
After cycling about 10 km on Mukaishima, you’ll reach the Innoshima Bridge, which leads to Innoshima.
This bridge is the only one in the Shimanami Kaido bridge that has a two – story structure.
Cars run on the upper floor, pedestrians and bicycles are running under the floor (in the bridge).
Innoshima
There are many famous gourmet eateries and tourist spots along the Shimanami Kaido.
After crossing to Innoshima, take a break at the popular cyclist spot “Hassaku-ya” and enjoy their Hassaku Daifuku.
Rest while admiring the Innoshima Bridge you just crossed.
Then, continue across the Ikuchi Bridge to Ikuchijima.
What an amazing view!
Ikuchijima
Ikuchijima is the flattest island on the Shimanami Kaido.
Even when cycling all the way around, there are hardly any hills, making it very easy to ride.
The next break is at “Dolce” for some gelato.
After cycling and working up a sweat, the cool and delicious treat is so refreshing!
The next destination in Ikugojima is the Setoda area.
Setoda is full of eating places and sightseeing spots and it is also a via point where there is a harbor that goes to Mihara and Onomichi.
Cross the Tatara Bridge and enter Omishima.
Omishima
The next island is Omishima.
At the foot of the Tatara Bridge, you’ll find the Michi-no-Eki Tatara Shimanami Park,
which houses a monument to the “cyclist’s holy land.”
Following the Shimanami Kaido cycling route (also known as the Blue Line),
Omishima and the next island, Hakatajima, are each about 5 km apart.
Omishima is just in the middle of Shimanami Kaido.
There are also many inn and it is the best place to stay.
For this trip, we will continue to the center of Omishima, and spend the night.
Hakatajima
The day after staying in Omishima, restart your cycling journey towards Imabari.
Enjoy the various sightseeing spots along the way.
The next island is Hakatajima.
Hakatajima is a short distance along the Blue Line, and we will proceed quickly.
Next, we’ll finally reach the last island of the Shimanami Kaido, Oshima.
Oshima
Finally, I came to Oshima, the last island in Shimanami Kaido!
After cycling north to south on Oshima, the final island of Shimanami Kaido, you’ll see the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge.
Crossing this bridge takes you to Imabari, bringing the Shimanami Kaido cycling adventure to its final stages!
Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge
The Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge connects Oshima and Imabari.
Please look at this view!
Cycling on this 4 km long scenic bridge over the sea is the climax of the Shimanami Kaido experience!
Landing on Shikoku! The Goal is Imabari Station
After crossing the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, you finally land on Shikoku.
The remaining journey is a 6 km ride to Imabari Station.
And at last, you reach the goal at Imabari Station, having successfully completed the Shimanami Kaido!

Or do you feel it is not so hard?
