Want a taste of cycling on the world-famous Shimanami Kaido? Kurushima Kaikyo (straits) Bridge is for you!

The full cycling distance on the world-famous Shimanami Kaido is about 70 km with spectacular views all the way!

Shimanami Kaido is an attractive route, but for an average traveler, it is very long and physically tiring.

(Even with my road bike, I personally start feeling tired after cycling 30 km.)

“I am interested in cycling on Shimanami Kaido but I am not used to cycling and don’t have much confidence to cover all the distance, yet would like to have a little taste of such a journey during my holiday, possibly with my family, kids or partner.”

If this is you, I would recommend a round trip over Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge.

You will thoroughly enjoy the experience!

Where is Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge?

Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge is located at the most southerly end of Shimanami Kaido (closest to Imabari city).

This bridge connects Imabari city and Ohshima island over Kurushima Kaikyo which is located in Seto Island Sea.

Kurushima Kaikyo bridge actually consists of 3 bridges, Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge I, II and III.

This is the first example of three consecutive suspension bridges in the world.

Its total length is 4105m, yes, about 4km!

What a long bridge!

The short cycling route over Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge gives you the highlights of Shimanami Kaido.

Totally excited by the view while climbing up the loop bridge

Shimanami Kaido, here we come!

With the excitement for the journey ahead, you will first climb up this loop bridge to access the main bridge.

Excitement may make you feel like climbing up the loop bridge too quickly, but let’s take time to enjoy this pleasurable moment!

From the loop bridge, you will see a ship-building factory — time for a photo!

Voilà! Look at this superb view at the end of the loop bridge!

WOOAH!!!

What a great panorama!

Cycling for 4km over the sea

4km one-way is a reasonable distance even on a bike.

You will be cycling for a good 20 minutes, and most of the time you will be cycling over the sea (except over Uma-shima Island).

By the time you get to the end of the bridge, you will feel pleasantly tired.

A perfect rest place – “Yoshiumi Iki-iki Kan (refreshment center)” on Oshima Island!

Once you safely arrive on Oshima Island, I suggest you get off onto the local roads.

There is “Michi no Eki – Yoshiumi Iki-iki Kan (refreshment center)” right next to the the bike-route entrance to the bridge.

And I highly recommend “Seafood BBQ with Shichirin mini stove” here.

You will choose your favorite seafoods (individually available) and cook them on a mini BBQ stove called Shichirin.

Enjoy the highlights quickly and easily!

A round trip over Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge is about 8km.

You will need 1 hour for cycling back and forth over the bridge.

Then you will enjoy a nice lunch on Ohshima island and a boat trip to see the amazingly fast currents in the sea (50 mins). In total you will roughly need 3 hours.

I also recommend starting this route from Imabari station, which will be about 20 km in total.

In my view, cycling over this bridge is the best part of the whole Shimanami Kaido route.

It is really worth cycling this small part of the world-famous Shimanami Kaido!
